Our story
Sien Lok Society of Calgary was formed in 1968 in response to a threat to the existence of Calgary’s Chinatown.
In 1965, the City proposed the construction of a 12-lane parkway, known as the East-West Penetrator, over Chinatown. Approval would have destroyed Calgary’s third Chinatown location.
A group of young businesspeople and professionals helped preserve the historic district by establishing Sien Lok Society. Today, we continue working for the betterment of Calgary’s Chinese community and uphold cultural diversity, history, cooperation, harmony and family.
